When you want to improve the appearance and feel of discolored, slightly misaligned, or chipped teeth, consider veneers. Veneers are paper-thin, customized restorative material bonded to the tooth’s surface. They protect damaged teeth and improve their look. If you’re a resident of Des Moines, Kent and Federal Way, Washington, and interested in this smile-changing procedure, make an appointment to see Dr. Andy Cheng and Dr. Tameem Anwar atFresh Smiles Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry.
A veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed over a tooth surface, either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth or to protect a damaged tooth surface. There are two types of material used to make a veneer: composite and dental porcelain.
A composite veneer can be placed directly (built-up in the mouth), or made by a dental technician in a dental laboratory and later bonded to the tooth, using a resin cement. In contrast, a porcelain veneer can only be made in a dental lab.
Veneers are a quick and efficient way to improve minor misalignments and defects interfering with your smile. They result in brighter, straighter teeth without the invasiveness of braces or crowns.
Veneers improve your smile, especially if you have:
Once you and your dentist at Fresh Smiles Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry determine that veneers are the right treatment for your smile, you set up 2-3 appointments to have the treatment. If a laboratory is making your veneers, you’ll have three appointments: one to create an impression, a second to have them fitted, bonded, and sculpted, and a follow-up procedure a week or two later to address any fit or hygiene issues.
When either Dr. Cheng or Dr. Anwar applies your veneers, they thoroughly clean your teeth and remove a tiny amount of the existing enamel so that the veneer has room to adhere. The veneer is fit and contoured to match your other teeth and bonded into place. Most patients don’t require anesthesia for the procedure.
Brush and floss veneers just as you would your regular teeth. You might want to limit your intake foods and beverages known to stain teeth such as certain types of berries, coffee, and red wine.
Veneers don’t last forever, so you have to replace them to keep your smile fresh. Proper care makes them last as long as possible.
