Emergency Dentist Q & A

What is considered a dental emergency?

It’s impossible to predict when a dental emergency will come up. You might need to see a dentist right away if you suffer an injury that knocks out a tooth, causes a chip or crack, or results in excessive bleeding of soft tissue, such as your tongue or inner cheek.

An emergency can also be a toothache with pain that peaks all of a sudden and leads to swelling, or an abscess that shoots out pus or blood around a painful tooth. Swelling in your jaw is another indication of a likely emergency. You might also need immediate dental treatment when you lose dental work such as a crown or a denture. This can sometimes happen if you bite into something that’s too hard or chewy.

If you’re not sure it’s an emergency, still call Fresh Smiles Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry. They can review your symptoms and determine if you need to come in right away or can wait a day or two to see Dr. Cheng or Dr. Anwar.

How should I handle a tooth that’s been knocked out?

If your tooth got knocked out, handle it as little as possible. If you can, insert it into its socket and bite down on moistened gauze to hold it in place until you can get emergency care. If you can’t keep the tooth in its socket, you must avoid rinsing it. Instead, place it into a container of milk and take it with you to your emergency appointment.

Should I see the dentist right away for a chipped tooth?

A chipped tooth may not cause immediate pain, but if it’s deep or fractured, the chip can negatively affect the root, causing more problems in the long term. The same is true if you lose a crown or a filling. While it may not hurt terribly, a missing crown or filling leaves your tooth unprotected and without support, which could mean more extensive treatment and possible infection. Seek treatment right away to avoid complications.

Smoothing a minor chip in a tooth is unlikely to be an emergency, but it’s a good idea to call Fresh Smiles Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry just for peace of mind.
