Digital X-Rays Q & A

Why do I need dental X-rays?

X-rays allow Dr. Tracy and the Fresh Smiles team to see issues with your oral health that may not be evident with visual inspection. Dental X-rays help the dentists find cavities and examine tooth roots for decay. They also provide a picture of the health of the bony area around the tooth and allow the dentists to see the status of developing teeth in children, teens, and young adults. X-rays help the dentist determine if periodontal disease is a result of inadequate oral care.

Do X-rays hurt?

When the dentist or dental hygienist positions X-ray films to take an image of your teeth, they may accidentally touch the back of your throat, invoking a gag reflex. It can be uncomfortable, but relaxing through the X-ray helps minimize any discomfort.

What should I expect when getting X-rays?

Even though Fresh Smiles Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry uses low-radiation technology to take X-rays, you’ll be draped in a lead apron to minimize any exposure. Do let the technician know if you’re pregnant.

Dental X-ray types include:

  • Periapical, which provides a view of the entire tooth from the crown to the bone
  • Panoramic, which shows a complete view of your teeth, jaws, sinuses, joints of the jaw, and nasal area
  • Bite-wing, which shows both the lower and upper back teeth
  • Occlusal, which gives the dentist a look at the bite of the upper or lower jaw

What are the benefits of digital X-rays?

Digital X-rays emit less radiation than conventional film-based X-rays. Plus, they give the dentist a clearer picture of your teeth. The process of taking the X-ray is similar to one using a film, but the sensor placed in your mouth is attached to a computer, and the X-ray image is projected on the screen.

Digital X-rays are available almost immediately, meaning you don’t need to wait for them to be developed. They’re also kinder to the environment as there’s no film used or saved.

How often should I have dental X-rays?

Adults with no notable oral health problems benefit from having X-rays taken once a year, simply to monitor the status of their teeth. Patients with specific issues or who are undergoing specialized dental work may need them more often.

Children may have X-rays slightly more often so Dr. Tracy and the Fresh Smiles team can monitor the growth and development of their baby and adult teeth.
