Dentures Q & A

What is a denture?

Dentures are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth. They’re supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Conventional dentures are removable, but there are many different denture designs, some that rely on bonding or clasping onto teeth or dental implants.

Dentures are custom made for you in a dental laboratory. Their fit is based on impressions taken from your mouth.

What are the types of dentures?

Dentures come in two main types: full and partial. Consult with the dentists at Fresh Smiles Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry to choose the denture type that's best for you. For the most complex of cases, Dr. Cheng and Dr. Anmar enlist the expertise of a denturist.

Why do I need to replace missing teeth?

Missing teeth interfere with chewing and speaking. Dentures help make those activities easier. The dentures also fill out your face and help prevent the sagging of facial muscles that happen when you lose teeth. Dentures can be designed to look very much like your own teeth, so you look like you.

What if my dentures feel uncomfortable?

Dentures may not feel natural at first. You may find them awkward or uncomfortable for the first few weeks or even months. Eating and speaking with dentures might take a little practice. A heavy or loose feeling is common, while the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to hold your dentures in place. Excessive saliva flow, a sense that your tongue doesn’t have adequate room, and minor irritation or soreness are also common.

The dentists at Fresh Smiles Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry will do everything possible to ease your discomfort and help you adjust to the dentures.

Do I still have to brush my teeth?

Dentures don’t absolve you of all dental hygiene. Brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth to keep the growth of bacteria to a minimum and enhance circulation. Brush your dentures with a soft brush every morning too; this keeps them clean and prevents staining. When you take out your dentures, keep them covered with water to prevent warping.
