What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are an excellent way to replace a missing tooth root. An implant is a small titanium post that anchors a crown or an overdenture. The process involves placing the implant into the jaw bone, waiting several months for the bone to attach to the implant, then taking a mold of the implant to make a crown or a bar that connects to a denture.

Why would I need a dental implant?

Leaving spaces where teeth once were can lead to a deterioration of your smile and your oral health. You need to replace missing teeth because:

  • Teeth adjacent to a missing tooth  tip (rotate) into the missing space. Over the course of several years, the teeth adjacent to the missing space may turn sideways and fall into the space left by the missing tooth
  • The teeth opposite the missing tooth grow toward the empty tooth space in a process called super eruption
  • The combination of rotation and super eruption could lead to a collapse of your bite
  • The collapse of your bite could lead to sagging of the mouth and an older appearance as well as jaw joint problems such as TMJ
  • Missing teeth decrease your ability to chew and can affect speaking
  • Missing teeth can ruin your smile

What are the benefits of an implant?

Implants improve your appearance and speech, plus they’re more comfortable than empty spaces or removable dentures. Implants are also more convenient than removable dentures that need to be removed or that slide as you eat.

Dental implants can make you less self-conscious of your appearance. They’re durable, long-lasting, and improve your overall oral health.

How many appointments do I need?

An implant is an involved procedure that requires 4-5 dental appointments. You start with a consultation and the development of a customized treatment plan. That includes a radiological scan to determine the placement of the implant. A mobile unit then comes to the office to do the scanning. Dr. Tracy, an oral implantologist, then puts the titanium post into the bone socket of the missing tooth; it takes 6-12 weeks for the bone to grow around the implant. Once the implant heals, Dr. ADo fits it for a crown or denture. At your final appointment, he puts the crown or denture into place.
