Crowns completely cap or encircle a tooth or dental implant. They’re customized to fit your mouth and bonded to the existing tooth with dental cement.
A crown restores the normal shape and appearance of a tooth that’s been damaged due to decay or injury. You might need a crown to restore a broken, misshapen, discolored, or worn tooth. It can also cover a tooth with a large filling or root canal.
Creating and placing a crown usually requires 2-3 dental appointments. At the first visit, the dentist clears the tooth of any decay and makes an impression. A dental laboratory then uses the impression to create the restorative crown. As you wait for this permanent version, you have a temporary crown put in.
Once the crown is finished, you come in for the second appointment. The dentist fits the crown in your mouth, cements it into place, and shapes it so if feels just like any of your natural teeth. If you need an additional fitting, a third appointment may be scheduled.
Several types of crowns are available. You can discuss the pros and cons of each option with the dental providers at Fresh Smiles Family Dentistry.
Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM)
This robust crown is tooth-colored. The metal core makes a PFM many times stronger than an all-ceramic crown. The metal core is only "high noble” and is more than 96% pure (23 karats) with an additional 2.6% platinum. High noble metal provides a better fit, enhanced aesthetics, and results in few allergies or sensitivities. Tooth-colored porcelain is baked on the outside of the gold. Fresh Smiles Family Dentistry uses the highest quality porcelains that are a combination of beauty, biocompatibility, and strength.
An All-Ceramic Crown (or Porcelain with Ceramic Substrate)
The all-ceramic crown is the most aesthetically appealing of all crowns. Because it contains no metal, translucency is usually excellent. Use these crowns on front teeth or teeth that are visible when you speak or smile.
Full Gold Crown (FGC)
This crown is composed of high noble metal -- about 72% pure (18 karat gold) and 3.5% platinum. Full gold crowns are usually placed on back teeth with low visibility at the patient's request. The primary benefit of a full gold crown is durability.
Other types of crowns are available, so discuss all your options with the staff at Fresh Smiles Family Dentistry.
